Spain's tourism surge and Wales' rise as travelers steer clear of Middle East unrest

Spain recorded a record 98 million international visitors in 2026, as tourists opted for European destinations amid heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East. The influx boosted hotel occupancy, tourism spending and demand for coastal resorts, prompting authorities to balance growth with sustainability concerns.

At the same time, British holidaymakers are favoring staycations and nearby UK locations, with Wales leading the trend. Hotel searches for Wales jumped 65 % year‑on‑year for the summer and rail bookings from all UK regions rose 37 %. Interest is also spreading beyond Britain; Spaniards searching for flights to Cardiff increased by about 20 % year‑on‑year, with travellers from Malaga, Alicante and Tenerife heading north. Seaside towns such as Llandudno and Conwy in North Wales are seeing especially strong visitor interest.
