Spain records 11 traffic deaths during summer travel operation

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) reported that eleven people were killed in traffic accidents during the second summer travel operation (operación salida de agosto) that ran from Friday 15:00 to Sunday 20:00. Four of the victims were motorcyclists. The deadliest day was Saturday, with eight fatalities, three of them motorcyclists, and two injuries. On Sunday two more people died in separate accidents in the province of Toledo – a 26‑year‑old man and a 29‑year‑old woman, one of them a motorcyclist.

The accidents caused significant congestion on major routes, including the A‑2 near Alcolea del Pinar (Guadalajara), the A‑1 around the Jarama circuit, the A‑5 near Calypo Fado (Toledo), the A‑6 at Arévalo, the A‑45 near Villanueva de Cauche, and the A‑7 in Fuengirola. In Andalusia, the 061 emergency service recorded 44 calls for traffic accidents in Cádiz during the same period, assisting 13 people and making the province the second‑most affected in the region after Málaga.

Overall, the DGT expects about 5.6 million vehicle movements during the operation, highlighting the heightened risk for road users, especially motorcyclists, during peak summer travel.
