Spain's transport unions call road and rail strikes over driver pensions and safety

The FeSMC‑UGT federation announced an indefinite strike of road freight and passenger transport starting 8 June, demanding the application of reduction coefficients that would allow professional drivers to retire earlier. The union says the government has not responded for six months, while the transport employers point to a 400,000‑strong driver workforce and the administrative complexity of the proposal.

At the same time, CCOO and UGT have scheduled partial strikes on Catalonia’s Rodalies commuter rail for 27 May and 5 June, citing insufficient safety measures and a lack of additional security staff. The stoppage is expected to cut services to roughly two‑thirds of normal frequency during peak hours, affecting thousands of daily commuters.

Both actions could disrupt supply chains, retail and e‑commerce deliveries, and commuter travel across Spain, highlighting growing tensions in the transport sector over working conditions and safety.
