Spain's unemployment falls as Social Security affiliates break 22 million mark

Spain’s labour market showed further improvement in June, with the number of people on unemployment benefits continuing to decline while the total of Social Security affiliates rose above 22 million. The drop in registered unemployment was driven by gains across several sectors, notably services, hospitality, construction and health, signalling broader resilience despite economic uncertainty.

In the autonomous region of Asturias, affiliates to the Social Security system exceeded 400 000 for the first time since 2008, reaching 401 327 in the first half of June. Regional authorities highlighted that this milestone aligns with President Adrián Barbón’s target to surpass 400 000 employed and to push unemployment below the 50 000‑person threshold, a goal already met in May with 49 320 job‑seekers. The tourism sector was a key contributor, adding more than 38 000 new affiliates.

Both national and regional data suggest a sustained upward trend in employment and a solid base of contributors supporting Spain’s social security system.
