Spain's V-16 emergency beacons spark debate over Guardia Civil response capacity

The implementation of V-16 emergency beacons in Spain has sparked debate regarding operational logistics and enforcement. The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has emphasized the importance of these connected devices, which serve as a mandatory replacement for traditional emergency triangles to improve road safety through both physical and virtual signaling.

On July 31, the DGT recorded over 3,100 activations from these beacons in a single day. This high volume has led DGT Director General Pere Navarro to consider instructions for the Guardia Civil to respond to these alerts. However, the Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (AUGC) has criticized the proposal, warning that current staffing levels in many areas make it impossible to respond to thousands of individual activations.

Regarding vehicle requirements, the DGT clarified that while the V-16 is mandatory for any vehicle in operation, a single device can be moved between vehicles as long as they are not being driven simultaneously. The DGT continues to encourage widespread use of the technology to enhance real-time traffic updates via mobile devices and variable message signs.
