Spain's Valencian water agency halts sewage leak and launches new water treatment plant

The public water sanitation authority EPSAR contained a sewage spill from an 800 mm collector in the municipality of La Pobla de Farnals, Valencia. The emergency response deployed 25 workers, excavators, tank trucks and pumps, allowing the provisional solution to stop discharges and keep the collector operating. Beaches in La Pobla de Farnals and El Puig were closed, with the water quality improving enough for the La Pobla beach to reopen. Full repairs are scheduled for the night of the following Monday.

In Catalonia, the Estació de Tractament d'Aigua Potable Estrella water‑treatment facility at the Sant Feliu plant was inaugurated. Built by Veolia with a €45.9 million investment approved by the Catalan government, the plant can treat up to 1 000 L of water per second using activated‑carbon and reverse‑osmosis lines. Regional officials, including President Salvador Illa and Veolia executives, attended the ceremony, highlighting the project’s role in securing water quality and supply amid climate‑related water stress.
