Spain's wages lag behind inflation as housing costs erode negotiated pay rises

Average wage increases agreed in Spanish collective bargaining this year are falling short of inflation. By June, the average salary rise was 2.95% in Catalonia and 3.1% across Spain, while inflation stood at 3.2% in both regions. Only about 30% of contracts that have already set a raise exceed the 3% mark, leaving most workers with pay growth well below price increases.

New sector‑wide agreements are aiming for around a 4% rise, which could preserve purchasing power, but many company‑level deals remain below inflation. Trade unions warn that, if inflation and housing price pressures continue, they may trigger industrial action in the autumn. Recent protests by Airbus workers in Getafe and Alstom staff highlight growing unrest over the gap between wages and living costs.
