Spain’s World Cup squad features a record number of Catalan players

Over a third of the Spanish national team travelling to the FIFA World Cup are from Catalonia. The 26‑man roster includes Lamine Yamal, Joan García, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Dani Olmo, Víctor Muñoz, Marc Cucurella, David Raya and Marc Pubill, all selected by manager Luis de la Fuente.

The appointment of Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García has generated controversy. De la Fuente warned that García’s inclusion could intensify scrutiny on incumbent starter Unai Simón, creating pressure that might later be regretted if the new keeper’s performances attract criticism.
