Spain's Youth Minister Sira Rego Declines to Run on Left‑wing Election List

Sira Rego, Spain's Minister of Youth and Childhood, announced she will not appear on the electoral lists for the upcoming general election that the left‑wing coalition of IU, Sumar, Más Madrid and the Comunes is preparing. She said stepping aside is "healthy" after serving in institutional politics and that she will make her experience available to support the coalition’s choice of a future lead candidate.

Rego stressed confidence in the "collective intelligence" of the parties to select a candidate who generates the broadest consensus. She called for a wide front based on a "program of minimums" covering public services, feminism, ecology and children's rights, and urged the parties to agree on programmatic issues. The minister also referenced the ongoing judicial case involving former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, describing it as a matter concerning the PSOE.

Her decision closes her legislative cycle that began with her election to the European Parliament in 2023 and signals a shift in the internal dynamics of the left‑wing alliance ahead of the vote.
