Spanish agricultural groups demand olive oil market intervention
Major Spanish agricultural organizations, including ASAJA, COAG, UPA, and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España, have formally requested that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food urgently activate supply regulation mechanisms for the 2026/27 olive oil campaign.
The groups warn that current market prices have plummeted below production costs for most farms. Specifically, extra virgin olive oil is trading at approximately €3.30 per kg, while lampante oil has dropped to €2.90 per kg. This decline is exacerbated by rising costs for fuel, agricultural inputs, and labor.
The request seeks the immediate publication of marketing regulations to establish mandatory storage percentages for olive oil mills, as permitted under Article 167 bis of EU Regulation 1308/2013. The organizations argue that these measures are essential to stabilize the market, prevent further price collapses, and protect the profitability of olive groves across Spain, including regions like Almería.
