Spanish agricultural markets face pork price slump and fruit pricing controversy

On 23 July 2024 the Segovia Livestock Exchange reported that the price of a 20‑kg piglet fell to €36, a 29 % drop over seven weeks, while cereal prices rose by €15 per tonne. The decline is blamed on reduced feeder‑farm activity and higher feed costs after months of swine fever, hurting the provincial livestock sector.

In Aragon, the farming union UAGA‑COAG sent an open letter to celebrity chef Karlos Arguiñano demanding an explanation of the price chain for fruit. The letter criticises a Lidl promotion that sold Spanish‑origin peaches and nectarines for €2.09 kg (a 26 % discount) while producers receive around €0.50 kg, below the estimated production cost of €0.58 kg, leaving growers with a loss on each box. Both issues highlight growing tension between agricultural producers and market pricing mechanisms in Spain.
