Spanish agricultural sectors promote virtual fencing technology

Agricultural authorities and organizations in Spain are promoting the adoption of virtual fencing technology to improve livestock management. In Guadalajara, the Provincial Council has announced €300,000 in subsidies for cattle farmers in extensive and semi-extensive operations to acquire GPS collars. These devices allow farmers to monitor animal locations via mobile devices and establish digital grazing boundaries without physical fences. The technology also serves as a preventive tool against wolf attacks and helps manage herds during emergencies, such as forest fires.

In Burgos, the agricultural organization ASAJA-Burgos has proposed a similar subsidy program to the Provincial Council. The group argues that GPS collars would facilitate more efficient resource management, improve fire prevention, and increase the profitability and sustainability of extensive farming in regions like Las Merindades, Los Páramos, and La Demanda. The proposed aid would specifically target the acquisition of electronic collars capable of real-time tracking and digital boundary setting.
