Spanish agricultural sectors report mixed harvest results

Agricultural sectors in Spain are navigating varying outcomes for seasonal harvests. In Alicante, the Colar fig harvest is concluding after a period of strong demand. Despite a dry and hot summer resulting in smaller fruit sizes and lower prices compared to last year, production volumes remained consistent with previous years. The Cambayas cooperative is now preparing for the pomegranate season starting in September.

Meanwhile, the carob harvest is underway, facing significant economic challenges. The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA) is calling on the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries to prioritize local carob over foreign alternatives. Producers are seeking fair prices to cover production costs, especially as recent market prices for carob seeds have dropped significantly from previous highs. High temperatures and water stress are expected to result in lower-than-average production this summer.
