Spanish agriculture faces rising costs despite higher market prices

Agricultural producers in Spain are facing significant economic pressure due to rising production costs, despite improvements in market prices. In Almería, the 2025/2026 horticultural campaign saw a 12% increase in average prices, but unit costs rose by 4.7%. Since 2021, production costs for greenhouse crops have accumulated an increase of nearly 25%, reaching approximately 0.632 euros per kilo. While the sector generates significant wealth, with Almería's horticultural commercialization reaching around 5,200 million euros, the increased expenses for energy, labor, transport, and inputs continue to squeeze profit margins.

In response to these challenges, Paco Núñez, president of the Partido Popular in Castilla-La Mancha, has pledged that the party will implement tax reductions for farmers and livestock breeders. Núñez highlighted that stagnant product prices over the last two decades, combined with skyrocketing costs for fuel, fertilizers, plastics, and electricity, have severely impacted profitability and hindered generational renewal within the primary sector.
