Spanish agricultural sector faces rising costs and viability concerns

The Spanish agricultural sector is facing a severe crisis driven by rising production costs for diesel and fertilizers, alongside falling product prices. While the Spanish government has extended the agricultural diesel subsidy at 20 cents per liter, professional organizations like UAGN and Asaja argue these measures are insufficient to maintain farm viability.

In Aragon, the regional government has announced 9 million euros in dedicated funds to help farmers cope with rising input costs, supplementing 4.5 million euros from European reserves. Meanwhile, in Castilla y León, the UPA organization is calling for stricter enforcement of the Food Chain Law to prevent abusive pricing by industries.

Specific crops are also under intense pressure. In Extremadura, the industrial tomato sector is facing potential collapse after two consecutive loss-making seasons caused by extreme heat, pests, and high costs. Additionally, the wine sector in Castilla y León is working with regional authorities to improve market positioning and profitability for viticulturists.
