Spanish agriculture faces weather shifts and harvest updates
Agricultural conditions in Spain are being shaped by varying weather patterns and environmental regulations. In Castilla y León, authorities have set September 26 as the start date for harvesting sunflower crops designated as ‘unharvested’ under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) biodiversity eco-scheme. This decision follows a season characterized by an unusually wet start that accelerated planting, followed by high temperatures and drought, which caused the crops to reach maturity earlier than usual.
In Galicia, specifically in the A Limia region, potato harvesting is underway but facing challenges due to water stress. Experts estimate a production decline of between 10% and 15% compared to historical averages. While the dry conditions have helped maintain high dry matter content and culinary quality for varieties like Agria and Donata, farmers report that some plots must wait for more rain to ensure the plants are fully developed. Additionally, producers noted difficulties with seed genetic decline and storage requirements.
