Spanish AI Advances Improve Brain Surgery Imaging and Truck Logistics

Researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid have created an artificial‑intelligence system that generates a highly accurate 3‑D facial reconstruction of patients undergoing brain surgery. The tool combines a low‑cost stereo camera with a neural network enhanced by a facial‑attention mechanism, reducing shape‑estimation error from 2.29 mm to 2.02 mm in simulated tests and from 16.91 mm to 13.85 mm in real‑world conditions. Images are processed in about 10 ms, making the method feasible for intra‑operative use and affordable for hospitals with limited resources. In a separate project, a team including the Instituto Tecnológico de Castilla y León developed an AI‑driven scheduling system for the entry and exit of trucks at industrial sites. Using evolutionary algorithms to allocate 10‑minute time slots, the model markedly cuts waiting times, improves dock utilisation, and lowers emissions from idling engines. The researchers suggest the approach could be adapted to ports, logistics centres and other transport hubs, with future versions potentially operating in real time and incorporating machine‑learning decision support.
