Spanish authorities arrest UK fugitive and face extradition appeal
Spanish authorities have arrested a dangerous fugitive in Lérida following an international arrest warrant issued by the United Kingdom. The individual, who has a history of violent crimes in Spain including attempted homicide and robbery, was allegedly involved in a violent street fight in Lérida's historic center in June. Following his capture by the National Police and Interpol Spain, he was ordered into prison by the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court.
Separately, the defense for Wilmer Chavarría, known as ‘Pipo’, is appealing a decision by the National Court to extradite him to Ecuador. Chavarría is the alleged leader of the criminal gang ‘Los Lobos’. His legal team argues that his life would be in danger and that Ecuador has failed to provide verifiable guarantees. The defense suggests that while the official reason for extradition is a 16-year sentence for 2010 homicides, Ecuador may actually seek to investigate him regarding the 2023 assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
