Spanish businessman admits receiving funds for Venezuelan energy mediation

Julio Martínez Martínez, an associate of former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, testified before Spain's Audiencia Nacional regarding payments received for mediating in Venezuela. Martínez admitted to receiving 181,037 euros from the U.S.-based company TVBM 1998 LL via his firm, Nez Asesores.

The funds were reportedly obtained to facilitate meetings between the owners of Turbovén, a thermoelectric company in Maracay, and then-Vice President Delcy Rodríguez. Martínez stated his goal was to assist the owners of the energy company following what he described as a pseudo-expropriation of the business, which had been in operation for 25 years.

During the hearing, Judge José Luis Calama questioned Martínez regarding the specific services provided in exchange for the transfer from the United States. Martínez noted that the owner of the entity paying him is American but holds interests in a Venezuelan company.
