Spanish charities pledge €1 million for Venezuela earthquake relief

On 24 June, two successive quakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck north‑central Venezuela, leaving about 5,400 dead, more than 16,700 injured and 1.3 million people affected.

Cáritas Diocesana of Salamanca transferred €100,000 to Cáritas España, joining the “Cáritas con Venezuela” emergency campaign. The donation is part of Cáritas España’s broader effort that has raised roughly €1 million and distributed food kits, potable water and medical supplies to tens of thousands of victims.

Fundación “la Caixa” launched a matching‑donation drive that will raise up to €1 million for reconstruction. It will match donations up to €500,000 for the Spanish Emergency Committee and another €500,000 for UNICEF Spain during a year‑long campaign that began on 24 July. The pledged funds are earmarked for rebuilding infrastructure and homes, restarting local economies, setting up temporary classrooms, supplying school materials and providing community and psychosocial support.
