Spanish Chiefs of Staff face increasing judicial scrutiny

Several high-profile Chiefs of Staff in Spain have recently come under judicial scrutiny, facing investigations, charges, or summons to testify in various political and legal cases.

Gonzalo Sanz, the former Chief of Staff to the Government Delegate in Ceuta, Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, has been summoned as a witness by Judge María Tardón. This is part of an investigation into the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta in late July.

Other notable cases include Juan Manuel Serrano, former Chief of Staff to Pedro Sánchez at the PSOE, who is a suspect in an investigation regarding alleged ‘socialist sewers’. Additionally, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Chief of Staff to Isabel Díaz Ayuso, testified in a trial involving former State Prosecutor Álvaro García Ortiz and previously faced charges regarding the disclosure of journalists' personal data, though that specific charge was dismissed.

In the regional administration, Eduard Rivas, current Chief of Staff to Generalitat President Salvador Illa, is under investigation by a Martorell court concerning contracts from the Esparreguera Town Council.
