Spanish cinema to reconstruct Miguel Ángel Blanco murder
Two upcoming Spanish feature films will reconstruct the 1997 kidnapping and murder of municipal councilor Miguel Ángel Blanco by the terrorist group ETA. These productions aim to explore the historical memory of the event and the massive citizen mobilization it triggered in Spain.
The first project, titled ‘El hijo de todos’ and directed by Álvaro Brechner, will begin filming in the Basque Country. The film focuses on the human dimension of the tragedy, centering on the experiences of Blanco’s parents and sister. The cast includes Pol Monen as Miguel Ángel Blanco and María Botto as his mother, Consuelo Garrido.
A second film, titled ‘Blanco’ and directed by Félix Viscarret, is scheduled to begin filming on October 19, 2026. These projects join a recent trend in Spanish cinema that examines the period of ETA terrorism through the perspectives of victims and those involved in counter-terrorism efforts.
