Spanish cities recognized for digital innovation and sustainability

The Alcàsser City Council has been awarded the 2026 Telecommunications Talent Award for Best Public Initiative for its Green-TDigital project. This initiative focuses on sustainable digital transformation, aiming to modernize municipal services and improve administrative efficiency through technology. Key components of the project include the implementation of a virtual assistant for citizen inquiries, improved accessibility, a digital appointment system to reduce wait times, and a shift toward digital document submission to decrease paper consumption.

In a separate development regarding urban innovation, the Spanish cities of Alicante, Madrid, and Valencia have been named semifinalists for the 2027 European Innovation Capital (iCapital) awards. These cities are competing in the main category for the title of European Innovation Capital 2027. The selection process, supported by the European Innovation Council, evaluates cities based on their use of experimentation in governance and their ability to serve as models for citizen-oriented innovation. The semifinalists will move forward to private remote hearings with a jury to present their candidacies.
