A study published in The Lancet indicates that Spanish cities are currently unprepared to manage the escalating climate crisis. The research highlights that climate change is already impacting Spain, leading to increased healthcare demands and deaths related to global warming.

Approximately 26 million people, or more than half of the national population, reside in 98 cities. A significant concentration of this population is found in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, which together house 40% of these urban residents. Additionally, 27% of the urban population lives across 16 other large cities.

The report, titled ‘The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change 2026 European Cities Report’, notes that demographic factors exacerbate these risks. One in five urban residents is over 65 years old (5 million people), and one in six is under 15 (3.5 million people). Due to the combination of population density, age, and climate phenomena, one third of the population is considered to be at higher health risk.
