Spanish Civil War Historians Reassess Conflict and Republic

Historian Enrique Moradiellos argues that the Spanish Civil War was "one more in the cycle of civil wars that devastated Europe from 1918 to 1939," placing the conflict within a broader European context of upheaval. He emphasizes the need for balanced interpretation, noting the revolutionary character of the republican zone and the subsequent counter‑revolution.

Historian Pío Moa contends that contemporary Spain mirrors the Second Republic, claiming "we are the same as in the Second Republic" and describing the Popular Front as "an alliance of separatists and totalitarians." Moa critiques the mythologised view of the Republic, highlighting internal divisions, extremist violence, and a lack of moderate consensus that, in his view, led to its downfall.
