Spanish Civil War memories documented in new publications

The semi‑annual magazine *Vallesos* has published a monographic issue dedicated to the first months of the Spanish Civil War in the Vallès region, marking the conflict’s 90th anniversary. The edition features research by historians, unpublished documents and interviews with surviving witnesses such as 99‑year‑old Joan Balart and former mayor Núria Albó. It details early militia mobilisations, anti‑feixista committees, the destruction of churches and the exile of local residents.

In parallel, the newspaper *SEGRE* is releasing a series of testimonies from four Lleida residents who lived through the 1936‑1939 war. The accounts, recorded by Jaume Arnal, José Nicolau and others, describe the fear, loss of family members and the long‑term social trauma experienced in the province and the neighboring Franja. The project aims to illuminate overlooked episodes of the war in the western Catalan region and to confront the lingering silence surrounding the conflict’s legacy.
