Spanish coastal communities launch cleanup and awareness events for Galicia and Asturias estuaries

On July 27, volunteers, health‑care workers and local organisations gathered at the mouth of the River Xunto near Ferrol to collect waste as part of the "1 m² against litter" campaign promoted by Ecoembes and SEO/BirdLife. The initiative, coordinated by Equiocio Ferrol, involved entities such as ASCM, Saúde Mental Ferrol, Adope and local authorities, highlighting a collaborative effort to protect the natural area around the beach of Esmelle.

A separate event will be held on 6 August in Villaviciosa, Asturias, where the association Protejamos Nuestra Ría will host a public debate titled "The Estuary: a silent decline". The meeting at Teatro Riera will feature scientists, journalists and local residents discussing the historical evolution, water quality, pollution sources and conservation challenges of the Ría de Villaviciosa, aiming to raise awareness and shape future management plans.
