Spanish Congress commemorates 50 years of the Law for Political Reform

Political representatives gathered at the Spanish Congress of Deputies to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Law for Political Reform, which was approved by the Council of Ministers on September 10, 1976.

Speakers at the event included former ministers Soledad Becerril and Rafael Arias-Salgado, feminist Merche Comabella, socialist deputy Ana María Ruiz-Tagle, and former Secretary of State Diego López Garrido. The ceremony was inaugurated by the President of the Congress, Francina Armengol, who emphasized that pluralism is a fundamental pillar of democracy and noted the current challenge of addressing democratic disaffection.

Professor Francisco Leira, who moderated the session, noted that while the law utilized existing structures of the previous regime, this did not make the Franco regime democratic. He highlighted the importance of young people understanding this distinction to avoid the misuse of symbols from that era.
