Spanish Congress rejects VOX proposal on Morocco agricultural competition

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Commission of the Spanish Congress of Deputies has rejected a non-legislative proposal introduced by VOX regarding agricultural competition with Morocco. The proposal sought to suspend the Association Agreement between the European Union and Morocco and to withdraw EU funds currently allocated to the Moroccan agricultural sector.

VOX argued that these funds should instead be redirected to Spanish farmers to support modernization, generational renewal, and innovation in the fruit and vegetable sector. The initiative also called for the implementation of mirror clauses to ensure imported products meet the same sanitary, environmental, and labor standards as domestic producers, alongside increased border inspections and stricter origin labeling.

The rejection of the proposal occurred as the Partido Popular (PP) abstained, effectively aligning with the government bloc (PSOE and Sumar) to block the measure. VOX remains the only parliamentary force supporting the initiative, which claims that asymmetrical regulatory costs and labor disparities are causing Spanish producers to lose significant market share.
