Spanish Congress to remove Francoist portraits and reviews Menorca's legislative activity
Following the dissolution of the Spanish Cortes Generales and the call for general elections on November 29, the Permanent Deputation of the Congress has reached two notable conclusions regarding the outgoing legislature.
First, the PSOE and Sumar parties have agreed to remove portraits of Francoist presidents from the portrait gallery at the Carrera de San Jerónimo palace. The portraits of Esteban de Bilbao y Eguía, Antonio Iturmendi Bañales, and Alejandro Rodríguez de Valcárcel y Nebreda will be withdrawn. This move follows long-standing demands from nationalist and leftist parties to honor the memory of dictatorship victims. Torcuato Fernández Miranda will remain, as he was instrumental in the political reform that led to the Transition.
Additionally, a review of Menorca's parliamentary representation shows varying levels of activity. During the XV Legislature, PP deputy Joan Mesquida and PSOE deputy Pepe Mercadal each recorded six parliamentary initiatives. Meanwhile, Senator Cristóbal Marquès recorded over 650 actions, primarily written questions to the Government.
