Spanish Constitutional Court renewal faces year-long political deadlock

The People's Party (PP) has completed one year of blocking the renewal of the Spanish Constitutional Court. The political stalemate centers on the presidency of Cándido Conde-Pumpido, whom the PP views as a risk to the separation of powers and democracy.

Although the mandates of several magistrates, including Conde-Pumpido, have expired, the PP has utilized its absolute majority in the Senate to maintain the current status quo rather than proceeding with new appointments. Under the Constitution, the 12 magistrates are chosen by thirds by the Government and the two chambers of the Cortes Generales.

While tradition suggests a bipartisan split in appointments between the PP and PSOE, the renewal process has been delayed repeatedly. The Senate leadership has extended deadlines for regional parliaments to submit proposals, contributing to the ongoing vacancy in the court's composition.
