Spanish consuls accused of irregularities in nationality applications

The Manos Limpias union has filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office against Spanish consular officials in Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, and Venezuela. The complaint alleges irregularities regarding the application of the ‘Ley de Nietos’ (Grandchildren Law), which facilitates Spanish nationality for descendants.

The allegations include administrative prevarication and serious negligence resulting in the falsification of public documents. Specifically, the union claims that the massive volume of applications has led to insufficient controls, alleging that some files were approved using only photocopies without proper documentary verification.

Furthermore, the complaint questions the acceptance of files for individuals born before July 18, 1936, arguing these cases may fall outside the legal requirements. The judicial initiative targets consulates in Buenos Aires, Bahía Blanca, Córdoba, and Rosario in Argentina; Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara in Mexico; Havana in Cuba; and Caracas in Venezuela.
