Spanish Court of Auditors provides PSOE donor list to judge

The Spanish Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Cuentas) has delivered a sealed pendrive containing the names of donors to the PSOE to the Audiencia Nacional. This move is part of a judicial investigation led by Judge Ismael Moreno into potential irregular financing of the political party.

The investigation focuses on donations made between 2017 and 2024, a period coinciding with Pedro Sánchez’s leadership. Authorities are examining whether the party utilized a ‘pitufeo’ (smurfing) scheme, where large sums of money are broken down into smaller, seemingly legal individual contributions to bypass statutory limits.

This inquiry follows allegations by Víctor de Aldama, who claimed that illegal commissions were channeled to the party through multiple donations. Investigators aim to determine if there is a correlation between the reported donations and the actual economic capacity of the donors, with particular scrutiny on the year 2020, which saw a record number of contributions despite the national state of alarm.
