Spanish court upholds convictions for unauthorized medication trafficking
The Audiencia de Cáceres has upheld the convictions of physician Marcos Maynar and his assistant, Ignacio Bartolomé Sánchez, for the trafficking of unauthorized medications.
Maynar has been sentenced to two years in prison, a fine, and 21 months of disqualification from practicing medicine or professions related to physical and sports training. Bartolomé Sánchez received a nine-month prison sentence, a fine, and a nine-month professional disqualification.
While the Spanish Commission for the Fight Against Doping (CELAD) appealed to have Maynar convicted of doping as well, the court rejected this request, maintaining his acquittal on that specific charge. The court also dismissed defense arguments regarding investigation procedures, telephone interceptions, and the chain of custody for seized substances.
