Bar España case trial begins in Castellón over long-running defamation hoax

The trial regarding the 'Bar España' case has commenced in Castellón, Spain. The proceedings involve six defendants accused of spreading a long-standing hoax involving false allegations of pedophilia, orgies, and ritualistic crimes centered around a local establishment in Benicarló.

The case originated in 1997 following a series of dismissed complaints by Reinaldo Colás. Over the next two decades, false narratives were disseminated via digital platforms, targeting various politicians, judges, and business leaders. High-profile figures, including former regional president Francisco Camps and former vice president Mónica Oltra, are among the many individuals whose reputations were affected by the misinformation.

The prosecution is seeking penalties of up to seven and a half years in prison and approximately 2.4 million euros in civil liability. The trial is expected to last until October 26 and will feature 34 witnesses. Defense teams have argued for the statute of limitations to apply to the alleged crimes.
