A court in Bilbao has ruled that the dismissal of an engineer at GHI Hornos Industriales was unfair. The company had cited the disruption caused by artificial intelligence as a reason for the termination, but the magistrate determined the firm failed to evaluate the actual impact of the technology or prove that automation had rendered the position obsolete. As a result, the company must pay the worker 12,330.56 euros in compensation.

Data from the INE indicates that while AI adoption is growing, it remains a minority trend in Spain, with only 21.1% of companies with 10 or more employees currently using the technology. Meanwhile, Funcas estimates that AI could impact between 1.7 and 2.3 million jobs over the next decade.

In separate labor rulings in Spain, the Tribunal Superior de Xustiza de Galicia overturned the dismissal of a shipyard worker who left his post following a dispute, citing a lack of proven disproportionate harm to the company. Additionally, the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Navarra revoked the dismissal of a retail salesperson, ruling that suspicions of theft without proof do not justify disciplinary termination. The company must either reinstate the worker or pay 12,216 euros.
