Ángel Arroyo, 1983 Tour de France runner-up, dies at 70
Spanish professional cyclist Ángel Arroyo Lanchas has died at the age of 70 in Ávila following a serious illness. A prominent figure in 1980s cycling, Arroyo is best remembered for his second-place finish in the 1983 Tour de France, where he was surpassed only by Laurent Fignon.
During his career, Arroyo competed for the Reynolds team alongside other notable riders such as Pedro Delgado. His career included a victory in the 1982 Vuelta a España, though he was later penalized ten minutes due to a positive doping test, which moved him to thirteenth place in the final standings—a result he always contested.
Arroyo was a key figure in the era that paved the way for future Spanish cycling successes. Following his retirement in 1989, he remained connected to the sport through the Peña Ciclista Ángel Arroyo in his hometown of El Barraco. Local authorities in Ávila have declared two days of official mourning to honor his legacy.
