Spanish dance takes center stage in international productions of Carmen

The production of ‘Carmen’ is receiving significant international attention through two distinct artistic interpretations. In Los Angeles, Antonio Najarro has integrated Spanish dance into a major superproduction for the Los Angeles Opera. Directed by Thaddeus Strassberger, this version aims to move away from superficial stereotypes, using elements like the manila shawl, Spanish cape, and castanets to convey a more raw and human portrayal of the character.

Simultaneously, the Antonio Gades Company has brought its version of ‘Carmen’ to Mexico as part of the 54th Cervantino International Festival. This production, choreographed by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura, seeks to reclaim the story for Spain by rooting it in flamenco. The performance, which highlights a woman’s struggle for freedom against social conventions, is also scheduled for a presentation at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico.
