Spanish defense agencies raise security concerns over SAIC Motor plant in Ferrol

The Spanish government is facing internal tension following reports from the Ministry of Defense and the National Intelligence Center (CNI) regarding the planned SAIC Motor electric vehicle factory in Ferrol, Galicia. Defense officials have raised concerns that the proximity of the Chinese-owned plant to the Ferrol naval base and the Navantia shipyard—a strategic site for military vessel construction—could pose a national security risk, including potential espionage.

In response, the Spanish government and regional authorities have defended the project. Minister for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, Óscar López, stated that the project will proceed while ensuring national security is fully respected.

SAIC Motor and its brand MG have also addressed the concerns. José Antonio Galve, MG spokesperson for Spain and Portugal, stated that the company understands the need to evaluate all relevant factors, including strategic defense, and emphasized that the project is of great importance for the region's economy and employment. The company maintains that the installation will ‘fully safeguard’ Spain's national security.
