Spanish defense firms advance naval modernization and shipbuilding

The Spanish defense sector is advancing several naval modernization and construction programs. Indra has been awarded a contract to provide maintenance, life-cycle engineering, and critical component supply for the Aegis combat system and integrated sensors on the F-100 Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates. This work is part of a long-term program to ensure the fleet remains technologically capable for NATO, EU, and national defense missions.

Separately, Navantia is scheduled to begin construction of two new Maritime Action Vessels (BAM 7 and 8) at its Puerto Real shipyard during the first half of 2027. The program, valued at 716 million euros, aims to expand the current fleet from six to eight units. These 90-meter vessels will feature diesel-electric propulsion and are expected to support approximately 2,000 annual jobs through 2030.
