Spain prepares for general elections on November 29
Spain is entering a pre-campaign period for the general elections scheduled for November 29, following Pedro Sánchez's decision to dissolve Parliament. Political activity is intensifying across the country as parties finalize their lists and strategies.
The PSOE has formed a joint Senate candidacy with Frente Amplio in 43 provinces, though this agreement excludes Catalonia and the Canary Islands, with the exception of La Gomera. Meanwhile, the PSE in the Basque Country is working to build a broad majority to ensure Sánchez remains in power. In contrast, Podemos and Frente Amplio will run separately.
Opposition dynamics are also shifting. Vox has indicated a willingness to facilitate a Senate majority if the PP cedes certain senators to them. Within the PP, there is reported nervousness regarding candidate lists and internal renewals. In Asturias, Álvaro Queipo has demanded the withdrawal of the Housing Law as a condition for negotiating the 2027 budgets.
Economic issues, particularly pensions and housing, remain central to the campaign. The government has committed to revalorizing pensions in 2027 based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a move estimated to cost billions. Additionally, the government is mobilizing 180 million euros in subsidies for housing in high-tension zones, including parts of Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia.
