Spanish educational facilities face safety and capacity concerns
Educational facilities in Spain are facing scrutiny as students and local officials demand better infrastructure and more permanent solutions to overcrowding.
In Alcañiz, approximately 600 students at the Adult School have raised concerns regarding the legality and safety of their current facilities. Students report issues including poor ventilation, a lack of emergency exits, the absence of an evacuation plan, and previous flooding. They claim to have received verbal instructions from the Government of Aragon stating the current site is not properly adapted for educational use. While Mayor Miguel Ángel Estevan maintains the space is capable of hosting students, the school has been in a state of transition since 2014.
In Sagunto, local political factions have united to demand the urgent construction of new primary and secondary schools. The city council is pushing for a concrete timeline to replace prefabricated classrooms, which residents argue should not be a permanent solution. The motion also calls for the rehabilitation of the CIPFP Eduardo Merello, a project that has reportedly been stalled since 2023.
