Spanish election call stalls Catalonia financing agreements
The decision by Pedro Sánchez to call for early elections has disrupted planned political agreements regarding a new financing system for Catalonia. The move has stalled a proposal that had recently been approved by the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council, which was intended to be sent to the Spanish Congress.
This disruption impacts the political agenda of Salvador Illa and the Generalitat. The proposed model, which could have provided an additional 4.7 billion euros annually, is now effectively shelved. Furthermore, the potential debt forgiveness of over 17 billion euros from the Autonomous Liquidity Fund (FLA) is also at risk due to the dissolution of the Spanish Parliament.
ERC has expressed disappointment, noting that the loss of this financing model undermines key pillars of the current government's investment program. The outcome of the elections on November 29 will determine whether the Generalitat maintains its collaborative relationship with Moncloa.
