Spanish experts link summer leg heaviness to circulation and heat‑induced vein changes
Health specialists in Spain explain that the common feeling of heavy, swollen legs during hot weather is linked to circulatory changes caused by heat‑induced vasodilation. Dr. Gala Fernández Martín‑Forero, an angiologist, notes that “when it’s hot a physiological vasodilation occurs, which makes venous return slower and promotes fluid leakage, leading to edema and the sensation of heavy legs.”
Marta García, a body‑wellness aesthetician, adds that “movement is one of the simplest and most important tools; the legs need to be activated to favor their own return system.” She stresses that adequate hydration, regular walking, avoiding prolonged static postures, leg elevation, strength exercise, and moderating salt, alcohol and ultra‑processed food intake help mitigate the symptoms. Both experts highlight that underlying conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency, hormonal changes, sedentary habits, or medication can worsen the problem, especially for women in peri‑menopause.
The advice emphasizes that while occasional heaviness can be normal, persistent swelling, pain, or varicose veins should prompt medical evaluation.
