Spanish explorer Antonio de la Rosa rescued from ice floe in Nunavut, Canada

Antonio de la Rosa, a Spanish explorer, was stranded in a hunters' cabin at Cape Crauford in Nunavut after a severe Arctic storm broke up the sea ice and swept his boat out to sea. The storm produced winds near 100 km/h and fragmented the ice shelf, causing the vessel to drift away while de la Rosa was sheltering about 500 m from the shore. He retained a satellite phone, clothing, food and water sufficient for three to four days, but most of his supplies were lost with the boat.

The Spanish ambassador in Canada intervened, enabling rapid activation of maritime rescue protocols. A Canadian icebreaker, whose route coincides with his location, is expected to extract him within 48 hours. De la Rosa remains unharmed and in contact with rescuers.
