Spanish farmer uses sheep wool to combat Mediterranean drought

In the Mediterranean region, organic almond farmer Xesc Sans is facing significant challenges due to climate change, including extreme temperatures, water scarcity, and forest fires. While annual precipitation levels remain relatively stable, the water is increasingly delivered through concentrated extreme weather events rather than consistent rainfall.

Sans reports that high temperatures and prolonged dry periods are causing trees to suffer and making it difficult to plant new ones. Additionally, unusually warm winters prevent trees from having necessary recovery periods. To combat evaporation in his lemon trees, Sans uses a method of placing sheep wool over irrigation hoses to retain moisture.
