Spanish film industry highlights Oscar selections and festival appearances

The Spanish Academy of Cinematography has announced that actress Miriam Garlo will present the three Spanish films preselected for the Oscar race on September 3. Garlo, the first deaf actress to win a Goya Award for her role in ‘Sorda’, will participate in the announcement alongside Academy President Fernando Méndez-Leite. The final selection for the Best International Feature Film category will be revealed on September 16.

In related film news, Spanish sound designer Laia Casanovas will be a featured guest at the 17th Kamera Akcja Festival in Łódź, Poland. Casanovas, who made history as the first woman nominated for an Oscar in the Best Sound category for her work on ‘Sirât’, will lead a masterclass regarding her sound design process. The festival, held in October, will also host the Polish premiere of ‘The Good Manners’, a film featuring Casanovas’s sound work.
