Spanish food safety alert over gluten in Harinas de Mallorca chickpea flour

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) issued an official alert after testing found undeclared gluten in a chickpea flour product marketed by Harinas de Mallorca. The problem concerns specific production batches – L7261205 (pref‑consumption date 31 January 2027) and 05270401 (pref‑consumption date 30 April 2027).

The affected flour was initially distributed in the Balearic Islands, and AESAN cautions that it may have reached other autonomous communities. The presence of gluten poses a health risk only to people with celiac disease or non‑celiac gluten sensitivity; the product is otherwise safe for the general population.

Consumers are advised to check the packaging for the lot numbers, avoid consuming the product if it matches, and return it to the point of sale even without a receipt. Anyone who has ingested the flour and experiences related symptoms should seek medical attention. Under EU Regulation 1169/2011, allergens must be clearly declared on food labels, and the omission gives consumers the right to a refund or replacement and, if necessary, a claim for damages.
