Spanish Football Federation funds fertility treatments for female players

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced a pioneering agreement with the Tambre clinic to fund fertility treatments, including egg freezing and in vitro fertilization (IVF), for its female international players, futsal players, and referees. The initiative, which runs through 2029, aims to help athletes balance their professional careers with motherhood, as peak athletic performance often coincides with peak fertility.

While the RFEF describes the move as an innovative way to protect health and support work-life balance, the decision has sparked significant debate. Some athletes and critics, including Olympic medalist Ana Peleteiro, have questioned whether such measures truly support women or if they implicitly pressure athletes to adapt their biology to the demands of professional sports. Others have raised concerns about whether technology is being used to compensate for a lack of structural changes in how sports accommodate maternity.

Similar support has been seen in other regions, such as Chelsea FC in England and Racing Louisville in the United States, which have also offered fertility-related benefits to their players.
