Spanish Football Federation to fund egg freezing for female players

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is finalizing an agreement with a specialized fertility clinic to fund egg freezing treatments for players on the Spanish women's national team. The initiative aims to help athletes preserve their fertility while pursuing high-performance professional careers, addressing concerns that peak athletic years often conflict with reproductive windows.

Alexia Putellas, a prominent figure in the squad, advocated for the measure, stating it recognizes that players must use their bodies for their profession even as they face their biological clocks. The RFEF has indicated that the program will be entirely optional and intends to announce specific details, including eligibility and coverage levels, during the second half of September.

While the move is seen as a step forward for athlete welfare, experts note the importance of following protocols from organizations like the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regarding medications used in fertility treatments. Additionally, the players' association, FUTPRO, highlighted the broader need for recovery protocols and support for mothers returning to competition.
